Living in small spaces doesn't have to be as hard as you might think. This has been the prevailing problem for many people living in the urban areas because of the lack for living spaces. In this guide i will be sharing to you 5 simple tips for small house owners to make your life more comfortable.

Tip #1: Hit two Birds with One Stone

In our society we've been thought that the more you have the more happier you will be, making us think that more is more. Also, in addition to the people’s consumerist behavior resulting people to buy a lot of stuff that they don't actually need at all. In contrary to this, the world renowned architect Mies Van Der Rohe popularized the saying that "Less is more." Meaning, the less something is complicated the more that it can be appreciated. Because micro apartments and tiny houses are so restrictive when it comes to space, it's easy for them to be overcrowded, making it chaotic and difficult to move freely for them. This is due to the fact that certain pieces of furniture are being needed for different types of tasks. Which quickly eats up space and make you feel small and restricted. In order to avoid this is to make sure that every single furniture that you have serves two or more functions. For instance, the chairs you sit on may also serve as a storage. To take this idea further you can purchase items that folds or moves order to make them disappear or add to their functionality and portability. For example desks that folds into walls, coffee table that turns into dining tables, and beds that can be turned up against the well when not needed. Those are often the part of the house that are often overlooked so make the most out of it. These will not just function as partitions or dividers but it can also be used to hang or display items.

    Tip #2: Declutter

Check your drawers and other nooks and crannies of your house and sort out all things that have really not been used at all. Such as old appliance manuals, unused cables, dead batteries and other whatnots. Overtime, these pile of unused items will just end up as junk and throwing them away would unclutter your house and save more space for things that really matter. Your house will certainly thank you for it. Now, after getting rid of all of that junk isn't the end. Certainly, you'll get lazy to declutter until such time that tons of unused items will again soon fill up your storage spaces. That is why building up a system of organizing things is crucial. You need to have a self-made system in place where everything you own has their own home. First, you should be intentional about what you own and being intentional of where it goes. For example, stationary and office supplies goes to one part of the shelf. Tools can go under the sofa. When a self-made system is in place, it creates a sense of structure in your homes. You're items are easily accessible and are pleasant to look at. And plus, you don't have to scramble around your house each time there's a thing missing. All will be in place, giving you a peace of mind. Furthermore, you may also realize if you're hoarding things you don't really need at all. When you're not sure on things you have to throw away or things that you should keep, it's a good idea to put them in a container with "transition box" label on it for you to keep the thing wherein you are having a hard time deciding; whether you’ll keep it or not. And if you don't use it after a month or so, then it is safe to say that you may now get rid of it or donate them to people who might need it.
Clearly, no one's perfect. And no matter how you keep things tidy, it will still get messy at times. This is more frequent when living with another person because you share the same space. And because being tidy 100% of the time seems an impossible feat, simple functional still furniture can greatly help and could be a great addition to your home to keep it more tidy such as valley trays and letter holders to keep the things that end up cluttering your space always such as papers, receipts, stationary and the like.

Tip #3: Prevention is Better than Cure

This rule really without saying. No one wants to live in a messy, smelly and dusty house. But the reality is, cleaning is something that has always been put off longer than it should. Maybe because everybody is busy or they don't really have the time to exhaust their energy cleaning. As you maximize a small space and as you use it often, it gets really dirty much faster. The dust accumulated by your shoes from all the traffic it went through will scatter within the inside of your house. The frequent movement inside a small space also gets all the particles move around as well. Moreover, the air gets pretty stale pretty fast. To make things simple and hassle free, start with something basic. In an ideal world, we would love an automatic robot vacuum cleaner who does all the dirty work for us. But for now, let's make use of the simple things that we have. Such as brooms and rags. Not only they conserve energy by not consuming any electricity at all, we also get to the parts where a vacuum cleaner won't be able to reach. Next thing is to remove all the obstacles when you clean. It is wiser to just slide the drawer than have a hard time reaching the difficult parts. Also, consider wiping the surfaces at least once a week to remove dust and bacteria. Because the space is small, smell travels pretty easily. That is why make note of all the things that might make your house smelly and hopefully no one gets suffocated. Such as garbage bins should not be left open if you don't want your house to smell like one. So even if your waste container isn't full yet, try and make it a habit to throw it away as soon as possible. Because you might be attracting unwanted visitors such as common house flies and other insects. Also, bed sheets should also be changed every 2 weeks, that's the minimum regardless of where you live. As beds takes up a large area of small houses, changing it can freshen up the whole area. It really is better to maintain things in its tip top condition rather than doing a general cleaning once in a while.

    Tip #4: Remember to Breathe

This rule is very similar to rule 3. In smaller spaces, you have a lot less air to circulate around your home. Smells, dust and damped don't really have a place to go. This is important because damped can cause molds that may lead to respiratory problems and can also cause fabrics to stop drying which is not only really frustrating but kind of disgusting too. That is why buying a dehumidifier is a great idea to improve the air quality inside your homes. Moreover, you may also consider buying an air purifier to get rid of pollutants and other unwanted smells. This could be great for people who are experiencing respiratory issues. A handy feature of it is giving off a white noise that is really helpful for getting you to have a better sleep quality.

    Tip #5: Lighting

Lighting can be based on personal preference but here goes. Natural light is better and has some great effects based on science. It can boost your mood and make you more alert. There are many ways of maximizing natural light for small houses. Make your walls color white or any other light tone colors. It gets the job done of bouncing the light around rhe room, making it appear brighter than using darker tones for walls. Plus. It makes the space feel bigger. Furthermore, it can also be a good investment to buy white roller blinds because not only it provides shade for intimacy but also you can project something on it using projectors, saving you the space of having a television set. Unlike traditional curtains, it can get out of the way and expose the entire window without blocking the path of light.

Now, after learning all of this, it's time to apply. Let's start by doing a recap. First, make sure that your set of furniture are multifunctional. Second, you should declutter. Third, keep things clean. Fourth, prioritize air quality. And lastly, the lighting. Now, do yourself a favor and try to be consistent with these things. Your mind will certainly thank you for it.

This is a great post, thanks for sharing. I agree that it's very important to clean the air in the house, because it's an excellent prevention of diseases. It's very important to keep the house clean and use an air purifier to get rid of bacteria. We recently learned that there is a way to clean the car and remove unpleasant odors using an ozone generator. But before using it, you must read the instructions and follow all the safety rules. If you visit Damage Control 911 blog, you will learn more about it.
