Lightbulb 17 OF THE BEST JAPANESE FOODS YOU SHOULD NOT MISS

Every once in a while, we all thought of going to Japan, because who doesnt want to? Well, Japan is not only known for its amazing robotics and culture, they also have a wonderful cuisine.

Here are some of the best of the best Japanese foods you must try once in your life! The list is not limited to these, there are still plenty of amazing dishes not included in here but make sure to try the dishes listed below, they sure are scrumptious and delicious.

    Name: Ikoi-Japanese-Restaurant.jpg Views: 75 Size: 76.0 KB

    OMURICE

Starting off with a Japanese go-to comfort food, omurice is served in most diners around Japan. Omelet is cooked in a gentle way to form an oblong shape. The omelet is not cooked all the way through therefore it has a creamy consistency. Omurice is basically a creamy scrambled egg inside an omelet on top of fried rice and drizzled with demi glaze.

    OKONOMIYAKI

Unlike the sweet and syrupy pancakes that you eat commonly. These pancakes are savory and full of veggies. Okonomiyaki are thick and big, it's not your regular size pancakes. The ingredients are usually batter with cabbage, and savory goods. It can be thinly sliced pork bellies, shrimps, beef, and you can load it up with cheese. The cooking time takes a while because of its thickness. You can cook your own Okonomiyaki at some restaurants but it's highly suggested that you let the pros do the work for you to enjoy the full experience.

    TEMPURA

If you are a fan of fried foods, then tempura is definitely a must try! You probably think tempura is just only shrimp covered with batter, right? I could not blame you because shrimp tempuras are the most popular among them. But tempuras can be a piece of meat, fish, or even vegetables dipped and covered with special tempura batter and deep fried until crispy and golden brown. You can enjoy and eat your tempura all by itself or you can pair it with rice or top it with your favorite noodles.

    TAKOYAKI

The cute little pancake balls are popular among the streets of Japan. Every street has Takoyaki vendors, it is no doubt a Japanese favorite! The beloved street food is made with batter, octopus, vegetables and flavorings. It is topped with sauce, mayo, seaweed flakes, and dry fish flakes or bonito flakes. It has a very unique savory taste, which probably made it popular. You can enjoy Takoyaki while walking around the streets, its a perfect snack to satisfy your hunger.

    SUSHI

When you think about Japan, the first food that comes to your mind is probably Sushi. And we all love sushi, dont we? This dish is known all across the globe, and it is served in many restaurants. Sushi is made with rice, filling, or toppings and is sometimes rolled in nori. Although there are many varieties you can choose from, typical varieties are makizushi, nigiri sushi, inarizushi. Sushi is a bite size dish you can enjoy.

    RAMEN

Another global favorite that I couldnt miss on the list. Ramen is a noodle soup that contains wheat noodles, broth and many toppings. The savory broth together with the toppings which could be meat, protein, vegetable, eggs, spring onions, sea weeds and other. You can mix and add as many toppings as you want, and that is no doubt the reason why many people are into ramen. There is something about it that is just comforting, kind of like a soul food.

    UDON

As part of the three main varieties of Japanese noodles, Udon is one of them. Udon noodles have three main characteristics, which are it is thick, chewy and made from brine and wheat flour. Do not worry, this kind of noodles is not as boring as it may sound, you can serve it in quite many ways. You can mix it with stir fries, add it on hot pots or you can even serve it cold. But Udon is usually served with irresistible savory broth together with some toppings. Kitsune udon, tempura udon, chikara udon, are the most typical kinds of Udon you can get, and I assure you that they are very delicious!

    SASHIMI

This dish might not be your favorite and it is kind of controversial. Sashimi is raw fish or meat thinly sliced and served with daikon radish, pickled ginger and you can dip it in soy sauce with wasabi. Sashimi and sushi are two different things, alright? Sushi comes with vinaigrette rice while sashimi is just plain raw fish or meat without rice. Unlike sashimi, Sushi does not always require its toppings/fillings to be raw. Meat or fish used in sashimi must be as fresh as possible to avoid any contamination, so if you are going to get this, make sure that it is fresh and served right before your eyes.

    TONKATSU

The Japanese made Tonkatsu like their own, the dish was originally introduced by Europeans. Nowadays, tonkatsu are made with pork chops coated with panko breadcrumbs. It is deep fried to perfection until its the perfect golden brown. Shredded cabbage or other salad green goes really well on this dish. Drizzled with a sauce that compliments really well on both vegetables and pork, you just cant say no to that!

    YAKITORI

Well, the ultimate pair for Japanese culinary is none other than Yakitori and an ice-cold beer. These salty tender chicken skewers are just so great for washing down after a heavy meal. Perfect for snacking in the summertime. These skewers are often dark meat but when it comes to common meals it also includes meat breasts with wasabi, livers, hearts, buttocks, gizzard, skin and many more. These are just hard to resist, so the next time you are having a beer party you have to try it with Yakitori.

    DONBURI

As popular as the Japanese ramen, you can see donburi at almost any tables during lunch time. It is a rice bowl dish which can fill your hungry tummies. If you are really hungry you should have some of this because it is a heavy meal. To prepare donburi, vegetables, fish or meat are fried or simmered and served on time of hot steaming rice with sauce. You can almost use any assortment of ingredients you want, but the most popular ones are oyakodon, gyudon, tendon, katsudon, or tonkatsu.

    NATTO

Most divisive food in all Japanese cuisine. Just like Marmite, Blue Cheese or Durian, Natto has a very strong overpowering smell and distinctive taste that will make you love or hate it. It has a rich umami taste which many are addicted to, but some are not just buying it. You can eat Natto all by itself or you can throw it some tuna and kimchi. You be the judge of it, so you better have some.

    TAMAGOYAKI

Whether it's for breakfast, lunch or dinner, you can indulge Tamagoyaki. In case you are wondering, it really means cooked egg. This egg dish is technically a rolled Japanese omelet which you can season with soy sauce or sometimes sugar. If cooked fresh, Tamagoyaki looks like a rolled crepe and you can slice it in smaller portions. When it comes to taste it has a little bit of sweetness to it.

    KASHIPAN

Bread lover? Ready yourselves for the lining waiting for you if you want to have a taste of this sweet bread. You will see many bakeries and vendors selling this. These breads are popular in the streets, choose from melon pan, an pan, karee pan. If you cannot choose just grab one of each, you will not regret it!

    TAIYAKI

Lets talk about one of the most traditional treats of Japan, it is none other than Taiyaki. This pastry has a sea bream shape, and it is stuffed with either bean paste, chocolate, cream and cheese at some times.

    JIGGLY JAPANESE CHEESECAKE

Well yes, you read that right! Jiggly cheesecake that bounces off itself, it just looks satisfyingly good. Not only is it pleasing to the eyes, it also tastes just as good as it looks. Less calorie count and it's not too sweet unlike regular cheesecakes. This airy souffle goody just melts in your mouth, you cant miss this treat! Many have attempted recreating the famous jiggly cheesecake but authentic from Japanese bakeshops still hit differently.

    MATCHA SUNDAE

You cant leave Japan without indulging with some dessert, to maximize your Japanese food trip you must try a matcha sundae. Authentic matcha sundae has a very distinct taste rather than the other matcha flavored stuff you have eaten before. Matcha tea ceremony is quite exclusive so even if you are not able to experience it you can still enjoy a matcha sundae. This sundae is composed of matcha soft serve with sweet bean paste, mochi rice balls and toasted rice krispies.
